Craig Springs History

As one of a number of "Healing Springs" resorts, Craig Springs has been designated as a Virginia Historic Landmark. As time allows we will try to add some of the history of Craig Springs to this page, as well as links to others who have collected historical information about Craig Springs Hotels and Resort.  A variety of information is available for your preusal in the camp office.

Documents:

Looking to the Future (Craig Springs Purchase Proposal in 1960) - This is a brief brochure describing the property and is a plea for funding from the member churches of the Christian Church in Virginia.  The "Virginia Christian Missionary Society" is the entity of the Christian Church (DOC) in Virginia.

Craig Springs Scrapbook (Pictures and clippings on the history of Craig Spring Conference Center) - This is a brief history of the facility, predominately prior to purchase by the Virginia Christian Missionary Society (Christian Church (DOC) in Virginia.

Craig Springs Pre-History This article was printed in "The Chesapeake Christian" in May of 1970 ... about a decade after the church purchased the property.  It gives a view into what it was like in the early years of the resort.  Included is a picture of a crew from Bethany Church of Roanoke working on the roof of the Spring House. According to the caption even though I can only see four people, the photo include Kenneth Hall, Tim Helton, Rayburn Journell, Jim Caldwell and Jim Dickerson.

Documents Predating the purchase of Craig Springs
by the Christian Church (DOC) in Virginia

The Carlsbad of America: This brochure is from May of 1937 and was printed in green which has faded so while it is legible it can be difficult to read.  It includes a list of "ailments that have responded to the Craig Healing Springs water" (page 2) and an "ANALYSIS OF WATER" (page 10).  There are also several pages of brief testimonials. It is an interesting document to read.

The Heart O' The Hills: This poem by Richard W Wallace seems to be from the resort period, however it isn't dated.
